Choosing Your Team of Staff
Choosing your team of staff wisely can be a vital part of your success as a manager. They will be training your team of
players, helping them to recover from injuries and advising you on your own players and potential transfer targets.
Here are some guidelines for choosing your various members of staff:
(I recommend when starting out with a new team that you offer mutual terminations to all of your members of staff, this
is the cheapest way of getting rid of them and they will readily accept. Most likely they will not be of a good enough
standard for what you want to achieve, however if they match up to the guidelines below they may be worth holding
onto)
Assistant Manager - Your assistant manager plays many vital roles, he can assess the quality of your team, help you
to decide whether a player is worth signing, attend press conferences for you (I wouldn't recommend this though,
always try to handle these yourself diplomatically) and help you to choose match day team, formation and tactics.
To view the recommended stats for an assistant manager, visit the Starting Out page.
Physio - You only need one physio and I would recommend trying to find one with at least a value of 18 for
physiotherapy. The higher his physiotherapy ability, the more accurate his prediction of how long a player will be out
for with an injury.
Scouts - Scouts are vital for helping you to find talented players and future stars. It is important that they have high
values in the Judging Player Ability and Judging Player Potential stats. The higher these stats the more accurate his
report on a player will be and you can better trust his judgement. When you're starting out I would recommend at least
a value of 14 for both stats, but eventually you want to aim for scouts with a value of 20 for both stats.
Coaches - Coaches are responsible for training your players, so it is vital that they have good enough statistics in key
areas, otherwise your players will not benefit from their training sessions and are unlikely to improve.
When starting with a lower league team I would suggest that you only have normal coaches and no youth coaches as
you will be mainly focusing on your first team. As you get further up the leagues and you start looking for youth
potential coming through the ranks this is the time to start taking on youth coaches.
I recommend that you have one coach for each area of training. The training areas are; Strength, Aerobic,
Goalkeeping, Tactics, Ball Control, Defending, Attacking, Shooting and Set Pieces. So in total you should have at
least 9 coaches, or 8 if you can get your assistant manager to cover one of the training aspects. Doing this means
that the coach will only take the part of training that he is most skilled at and the players will benefit more. You will
notice too that doing this increases the star rating of each aspect of training.
Here are the recommended attributes for your coaches:
(These recommend attributes will help you to filter in the staff search the coaches that will have the highest star rating
for each area of coaching. Reputation and personality of each coach also has a bearing on the star rating)
N.B. Determination, Level of Discipline & Motivation are key attributes for all coaches. The higher their
attributes for these along with the relevant attributes below, the higher star rating they will have.
If you are managing a lower league team and are finding it difficult to find staff that match the criteria below, I
recommend you just lower your search criteria to around ten for say attacking and tactical (for an attacking coach) but
also motivation, determination and level of discipline and then work your way up.
